The full meaning

No cap means "no lie" or "I'm telling the truth." Cap means a lie or exaggeration, so "no cap" is a way of vouching for what you just said. Conversely, "that's cap" or just "cap" means "you're lying," and "capping" means lying.

Where “no cap” comes from

The expression comes from African-American Vernacular English (AAVE), where "capping" has long meant boasting or exaggerating. Hip-hop and social media carried it into mainstream youth slang in the late 2010s, and it has proven far more durable than most slang — still going strong years later. The blue cap emoji 🧢 is shorthand for calling out a lie.

How it’s actually used

Dropped at the end of statements for emphasis ("that test was impossible, no cap") or used to challenge someone ("you did NOT run a mile in five minutes — cap").

That's the best burger in town, no cap.
He said he finished the whole game in one night. Cap.
No cap, this is the hardest class I've ever taken.
