What Does “Opp” Mean?
An opponent, rival, or someone not to be trusted.
The full meaning
Opp is short for opposition or opponent. In teen slang it means a rival, enemy, or someone who can't be trusted — anyone "on the other side." Among most kids it's used lightly: the rival sports team is the opps, the sibling who reported you to mum is an opp.
Where “opp” comes from
The term comes from street and drill-rap culture, where "opps" referred to genuine rivals. As drill music went mainstream in the 2010s–2020s, the word softened into general youth slang for any rival or untrustworthy person, mostly used jokingly.
How it’s actually used
Usually playful exaggeration: losing a board game makes the winner "an opp," a teacher who assigns weekend homework is "the biggest opp." "Opp" behavior means acting against your interests or leaking your business.
✔ For parents & teachers
In everyday teen use it's playful rivalry talk. Context matters though: in certain music or online contexts "opps" refers to genuine gang rivalry, so if it appears alongside concerning content rather than jokes about siblings, it's worth paying attention.
